A WALKER who slipped and broke his ankle on a coastal footpath faced a gruelling wait for rescue yesterday.

Officers from the Swanage and St Albans Coastguard were called to the footpath above Dancing Ledge in Purbeck during the afternoon after the 65-year-old was injured.

He had been walking with friends when he slipped and fell on wet ground, breaking his ankle.

An air ambulance was called to take the man to hospital.

However, due to thick fog, it was unable to land close enough to the casualty.

A specialist ambulance team from Exeter were then deployed to help.

As conditions were so poor, paramedics had to walk to the path to rescue the casualty.

First aid was given while a specialist vehicle from the National Trust was requested.

The casualty was then helped into the vehicle and taken to the ambulance, which had been held at Acton near Langton Matravers.
