JAZZ is coming to a Dorset village to raise funds for an education charity.

The sensational Sunset Café Stompers will invoke the spirit of Louis Armstrong and fill Portesham Village Hall with the pulse of New Orleans-style jazz on Saturday April 22.

The jazz band is performing from 7.30pm to raise funds for Dors-to-India, the Chesil area charity that helps make the dream of school education a reality for some of south-east India’s poorest children.

People can enjoy some brilliant music and a great night out, safe in the knowledge that every penny they contribute will be helping a growing number of young people break free from the impact of grinding poverty and poor health.

The Sunset Café Stompers are a West Country band led by pianist Mike Denham.

The band is often praised for itsr interesting repertoire. They take their name from a famous jazz-age night-spot on Chicago’s notorious South Side. Al Capone owned it and Louis Armstrong starred there.

The Stompers do play the music of that period - great tunes from Scott Joplin, Irving Berlin, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and Fats Waller. However, the band’s wide-ranging book also features songs by artists as different as Patsy Cline, Marilyn Monroe, the Inkspots, Fats Domino, even Elvis. Beneath it all lies the elusive, enthralling beat of New Orleans.

To book tickets for £10 each, email dorstoindia@gmail.com or telephone Christine Voce the Dors-to-India secretary on 07490 372212.
