FROM egg-rolling to sand-sculpting a number of events will be taking place to suit all ages in Dorset this weekend.

With the sun set to make a welcome appearance and the children free from school for the Easter holidays, spring seems to have definitely sprung, along with plenty of activities for residents to get involved with.

To truly mark the start of the season, Sandworld will once again open its doors on Saturday ahead of the annual Weymouth Sand Sculpture Festival.

Visitors to the Lodmoor Country Park site can feast their eyes on a range of creations including Kung Fu Panda, King Kong, Jurassic Giants and Finding Nemo, this year finished off with an additional splash of colour to really bring the art to life.

In the town centre, youngsters can rub shoulders with nationally acclaimed Dorchester grime artist Isaiah Dreads who will be hosting a music workshop alongside BBC DJ Jaguar Bingham at Weymouth Library.

The free event, suitable for 14-18-year-olds, runs from 12pm-2.30pm and is designed to give young people an insight into the careers aspect of the music industry and the resources available at the library.

Over in the county town, a cascade of decorated are set to race down Friary Hill from 2pm on Saturday.

The egg-rolling derby was the idea of Dorchester Mayoress Anita Harrier and town crier Alistair Chisholm who said they wanted to do something a little different to the usual egg hunt.

Entrants simply need turn up on the day, so long as their egg is hard-boiled and decorated, and pay the £1 entry free.

The event will raise money for the Mayor of Dorchester’s charities, the Social Stroke Club, the Keep Military Museum and Dorchester Poverty Action Group.

The Easter festivities continue in Littlemoor on Saturday with a fun day at St Francis of Assisi in memory of the tireless fundraiser Jan Hinton.

GO girls, a gynaecological cancer support group which Jan was instrumental to before losing her battle to ovarian cancer last year, has organised the event which will take place between 2pm and 5pm.

Hilary Maxwell, chairman GO Girls said: “It promises to be a great family fun day with Easter face painting, craft stall, plenty of cake, photobooth and raffle. It’s a privilege to honour Jan’s memory with such a fun event - she was always organising fun for others and we’d know she would have loved this.”

Tiny the great dane and Go Girls mascot will be making his debut appearance at the event to judge the Easter Bonnet competition along with Hilary and vice-chairman Teresa Wolff.

For Dorset’s animal-lovers, Melcombe Regis Rotary Club’s annual dog show returns to Budmouth College on Sunday.

Between 10am and 5pm, the Crafty Dog show will feature displays from the Dancing Dogs and Canine Partners, stalls, children’s games and novelty classes with Weymouth’s carnival Queen.
