A DRIVER had a miraculous escape after a car flipped on a main road, landing on its roof.

The driver of the car involved in the collision on Dorchester Road in Weymouth yesterday was not injured.

Police were called just after 11am to reports of an overturned car on Dorchester Road near Lidl.

The road was littered with broken glass and car parts after a silver Renault Clio ended up on its roof.

The driver, a man from Weymouth, walked away from the crash and was treated for only minor injuries.

Pamela Ferenc, who lives on Westerhall Road in Weymouth, said: “I was just walking up to do some shopping when I saw police everywhere, and I saw the car on its roof.

“It’s dreadful, but it’s amazing he wasn’t hurt. I saw a great big lump taken out the side of the car.

“It’s a very dangerous road, it is the main road from Dorchester to Weymouth seafront. People speed along this road too often, there’s traffic down this road all day long.”

The crash happened opposite the junction where Weymouth Bay Avenue joins Dorchester Road.

Another passer-by who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “Often there is a string of people parked opposite the junction. It’s dangerous.”

A police officer at the scene said 'it's just amazing no-one was hurt'.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We were called to reports of a car which was described as 'flipped over'.

"It involved one silver Renault Clio registered to a man from Weymouth, and a white BMW registered to a man from Kent.

"There were no injuries, and the vehicle was recovered at 12:26pm.

"There will be an investigation as to what caused it."

There were road closures in place both ways between Milton Terrace and Weymouth Bay Avenue for more than an hour while police were at the scene.

Heavy traffic queues were diverted down Weymouth Bay Avenue while police waited for the recovery vehicle.

The road reopened again at 12.30pm.

A similar incident happened in August 2016, where a car ended up on its roof near the Weymouth Bay Avenue junction.
