A Dorchester mum suffering from a rare cancer needs to raise more than £100,000 to go abroad for a special treatment that could save her life.

Sian Kwan, 38, was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in January, a rare cancer which attacks the lining of the bile duct connecting the liver and small intestine.

Doctors have told Sian that they can no longer treat the disease in the UK. The mum-of-two is now looking at the prospect of heading to the U.S or Hong Kong for treatment.

Sian has an eight-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son. In a heart-wrenching video online, she tearfully explained her situation to the public.

She said: “It’s been a real struggle to hold it all together.

“There is no curative treatment within the UK for me, I have to go abroad. We are now faced with the choice of how on earth we are going to raise £100,000.

“We could sell our house, we could sell our car, but we would still be looking for a huge amount of money that will allow me to see my children grow up because every mum wants that.

“You don’t think that there might not be a time when you can see them grow up, especially when your kids are really young.”

According to Macmillan, around 1,600 people are diagnosed with the cancer each year in the UK.

Sian has set up a crowdfunding page online on JustGiving in the hopes of raising £116,000. Over 200 supporters have already helped to raise nearly £6,000 in less than three weeks.

Sian’s friend Megan O’Donovan, from Weymouth, said the news was a "complete shock" as Sian is a non-smoker and non-drinker in great health.

She said: “She is a bubbly person who I worked with for just under a year, who never lets anything get in her way.

“Despite finding out in the early days she might possibly have cancer, she still helped me when I needed a friend and was still being an amazing mum to her two children and wife to her husband.”

Sian said she is seeking the urgent treatment as she is vulnerable to the tumour spreading over the next two months.
