A CELEBRATION of Portland's unique culture, heritage and natural environment is underway.

The Spirit of Portland festival organised by the Portland Community Partnership and supported by the town council is part of a wider tourism strategy to raise the island's profile.

Running from today until Sunday, August 6 it includes many different events for all the family, most of which are free.

The festival celebrating the island’s past and present started in 2013, developing ideas from the Revive Portland held in previous years and building on the success of the 2012 Olympic events relating to the island.

Events tomorrow (Sat) include the Portland Fete from 2pm until late at the playing fields on Weston Road. There's also Art in the Park at Easton Gardens from 10am-4pm.

On Sunday there's Family Fun Kite Flying at The Pulpit Inn, Portland Bill from 11am-3pm, and Rev Chris Briggs says farewell to the island at a tea party and service at Easton Methodist Church from 4.30pm.

There's a host of talks and displays at various venues throughout the week.

Then next Saturday, August 5 the Southwell Street Fayre will be held from 1pm-6pm and a summer garden party will be held at St George's Church from 2pm.
