A man has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling through a skylight in the entrance hall of a Weymouth school.

Emergency services were called to All Saints School on Sunnyside Road this morning.

A spokesman for Dorset Police said: “We were called at 10.48am to reports that a workman had suffered serious injuries after falling through a skylight at All Saints School in Weymouth.

“The man, aged in his 50s, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

“A cordon has been put in place and the health and safety executive has been informed.”

It is estimated the man fell 12 to 13ft and he suffered head, chest and possible pelvic injuries.

Matt Care, operations officer at South Western Ambulance, said they were called at 9.50am to reports that a male had had an accident.

He said one rapid response vehicle, one ambulance, one officer and two air ambulances were called to the scene.

Critical care interventions were made at the school before the man was flown to hospital.

At the school, the man’s colleagues were visibly shaken and said the man had just come back from a holiday in France.

Police remained on site after the man was airlifted to hospital to secure the scene and begin an investigation.

The man’s next of kin have been informed.

The full extent of the man’s injuries is not currently known but police say they are being treated as life-threatening.

A police spokesman said: “Investigations are ongoing and police are liaising with the health and safety executive.”

Mayor of the Borough of Weymouth and Portland Kevin Brookes said: “I hope the gentleman is okay and his injuries are not too severe. I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery. All our thoughts go out to him and his family.”

He added he hoped the investigation was completed quickly and police could get to the bottom of what happened.

Due to the summer break, no children were at the school at the time of the accident.

The man was completing maintenance work at the premises.

The school has been closed and it is not yet known when it will reopen.
