A WEYMOUTH business held a paw-some “behind the scenes” open day.

The open day at Dave Cumber Vets in Link Park, Chickerell, was also a fundraiser to raise money for a defibrillator.

The event attracted more than 280 visitors and raised £689, almost half of the target for the lifesaving machine.

The event offered attractions such as guided tours, CPR training and a ‘guess the weight of the dog’ stand.

Dave Cumber, owner and director of the firm – which has recently moved to Link Park – said: “As we are in the business of health and well-being, the team decided that Link Park really should have a lifesaving heart defibrillator installed on site, just in case anyone should need it, as most of the team at Dave Cumber Vets are trained to use a defibrillator.

“The defibrillator would be located at Dave Cumber Vets and we need to raise around £1,500 for the equipment.”

Mr Cumber wore a Scooby Doo dog outfit for the entire open day, which included stalls such as ‘guess the weight of Gru and Margot’ – Mr Cumber’s dogs – a giant teddy bear name-guessing game and a raffle and cake stand.

There were also tours of the surgery and demonstrations including pet dentistry, live cardiac scans and first aid.

Mr Cumber said: “We were absolutely thrilled to meet so many people with their furry friends at our open day. We had no idea how many people would be interested but the weather was perfect and from start to finish we were packed out.

“We raised a brilliant £689 and are now well on the way to buying the life-saving defibrillator for Link Park. We also received a donation from DJ Property towards the equipment, which was a fantastic boost.

“I would like to thank everyone who helped make the day such a success but especially all the people who came along with their pets to support us. We hope they enjoyed the day as much as we did.”

Dave Cumber Vets has said it will be working hard over the coming months to raise the remaining funds for the defibrillator.
