Out and about on the roads this week? Here's all the roadworks to be aware of across the region on Highways England-operated roads.

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 25 August 2017 but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.

  • M3 junctions 2 (M25) to 4a Farnborough, Hampshire: smart motorway improvement

We opened the M3 as a four-lane smart motorway, between junction 4a for Farnborough and junction 2 for the M25, on Friday 30 June. The speed limit was initially manually controlled at 50mph while testing of the smart motorway technology was finalised. This process has now been successfully completed enabling the smart motorway to operate at the national speed limit from 1 August.

  • M3 junction 6 Basingstoke, Hampshire: bridge strengthening

Work to maintain journeys by repairing the bridge supports continues this week. Narrow lanes will be in place 24/7 on the roundabout beneath the M3 until February 2018.

  • M3 junctions 9 to 10 Winchester, Hampshire: drainage

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the drainage system along the M3 takes place this week.  Lane closures will be in place on the north and southbound carriageways overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Tuesday 29 August for 4 nights.

  • M4 junction 10 Wokingham, Berkshire: bridge reconstruction

Work to improve journeys by refurbishing the bridge that carries the link roads over the M4 continues this week. Narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place on the slip roads and a 50mph speed limit is in place on the M4 carriageway until November 2017.

  • M4 junctions 11 Reading to 12 Theale, Berkshire: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the M4 continues this week.  Lane closures will be in place on the westbound carriageway overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Tuesday 29 August for 3 nights.

In addition, the westbound slips for the Reading Service Area will be closed overnight on Tuesday 29 August and the westbound exit and entry slip roads at junction 12 will be closed overnight on Wednesday 30 August.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

  • M4 junctions 12 Theale to 13 Chieveley, West Berkshire: bridge refurbishment and road markings

Work to improve journeys by refurbishing a series of bridges that carry the M4 over local roads and renewal of road markings continues this week.  Overnight lane closures will be in place on the east and westbound carriageways until late-October.

In addition, the eastbound entry and exit slip roads at junction 13 will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Thursday 31 August.  Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

  • A3(M) Havant, Hampshire: street lighting

Work to improve journeys by maintaining the street lighting around the A3(M)/A27 interchange continues this week. Lane closures will be in place on the A27 eastbound carriageway and the A3(M) southbound carriageway will be closed from junction 3 to the A27 overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Tuesday 29 August for 2 nights.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via B2150, Bedhampton and Bedhampton Hill.

  • A3 Sheet Link, Hampshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out surveys to the drainage system along the A3 takes place this week.  The southbound exit and entry slip roads at the A272 Sheet Link junction will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Wednesday 30 August.  Clearly signed diversions will be in place via the adjacent junctions.

  • A3 Liss/Flexcombe, Hampshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out surveys to the drainage system along the A3 takes place this week.   The northbound exit slip road at the Liss junction will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, on Thursday 31 August.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Ham Barn Roundabout.

  • A3 Hindhead Tunnel, Surrey: maintenance

Work to maintain journeys by carrying out tunnel maintenance takes place this week.  The southbound tunnel will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, from Tuesday 29 August for 4 nights.  Traffic will be diverted through the northbound tunnel in contraflow under a 40mph speed limit.

  • A3 Guildford, Surrey: lighting replacement

Work to ensure road user safety by replacing the lighting columns between University Interchange and Compton continues this week. The A3 southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 9pm and 6am, until Friday 15 September (Monday to Friday only). A clearly signed diversion route will be in place via Guildford.

  • A27 Farlington, Hampshire: street lighting

Work to ensure road user safety by maintaining the street lighting around the A2030 Eastern Road junction continues this week.  The eastbound exit and entry slip roads at the junction will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, until Thursday 21 September (Monday to Friday only).  Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

  • A31 Cadnam to Ringwood, Hampshire: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A31 continues this week. The A31 westbound carriageway will be closed from the M27 junction 2 (Cadnam) to the A338 Ashley Heath Roundabout overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Tuesday 29 August for 3 nights.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A326, Totton to Christchurch then north on the A338.

  • A31 Ashley Heath (Ringwood), Hampshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out CCTV surveys of the drainage system along the A31 continues this week.  The eastbound exit slip road at the A338 Ashley Heath roundabout will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Friday 1 September.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Ringwood Interchange and return.

  • A31 St Leonards, Dorset: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings along the A31 continues this week.  The A31 eastbound carriageway will be closed from the A347 Palmersford Roundabout (Ferndown) to the A338 Ashley Heath Roundabout overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Friday 1 September.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via Ringwood Road, West Parley, Hurn and the A338.

  • A31 Canford Bottom (Wimborne), Dorset: road markings

Work to improve journeys by renewing the road markings around the Canford Bottom junction takes place this week.  Lane closures will be in place on the approaches and the section through the centre of the roundabout will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Friday 1 September.

  • A34 Litchfield, Hampshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out CCTV surveys of the drainage system along the A34 continues this week.  Lane 2 of the north and southbound carriageways will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Thursday 31 August.

  • A34 Highclere/Beacon Hill, Hampshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out CCTV surveys of the drainage system along the A34 continues this week.  Lane 2 of the north and southbound carriageways will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Friday 1 September.

  • A34 Abingdon, Oxfordshire: surveys

Work to improve journeys by carrying out CCTV surveys of the drainage system along the A34 continues this week.  Lane 1 of the southbound carriageway and the southbound exit slip road at the Abingdon junction will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Wednesday 30 August.  A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Marcham Interchange and return.

  • A34 Botley to Wolvercote (Oxford), Oxfordshire: resurfacing

Work to improve journeys by resurfacing the A34 northbound carriageway near Oxford starts this week. The A34 northbound carriageway will be closed from the A420 Botley Interchange to the A44 Peartree Interchange overnight, between 10pm and 6am, from Wednesday 30 August for three weeks (Monday to Friday only). 

In addition, to allow structural surveys to be carried out the A34 northbound carriageway will be closed from the A423 Hinksey Hill junction to the A44 Peartree Interchange overnight, between 10pm and 6am, on Tuesday 29 August.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the Oxford ring-road for all closures.

  • A303 Thruxton and Andover, Hampshire: bridge refurbishment

Work to improve journeys by refurbishing the bridges that carry the A303 over local roads near Thruxton and at Picket Twenty continues this week. Narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place on both carriageways until January 2018.
