VOLUNTARY groups in the borough could receive a welcome cash boost from the council.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council is launching a one-off, one-year, fund of £50,000 to support community and charitable groups in the area.

The council hopes the money will help support community priorities in the areas of the borough most in need, namely Chapelhay and Rodwell, Littlemoor, Melcombe Regis, Underhill and Westham.

Cllr Christine James, WPBC’s briefholder for social inclusion, said:“Community and voluntary groups provide a great service for the area and make a real difference to the lives of many of our residents. We’re keen to provide support, especially to new or newly formed groups that provide real benefits for residents of the borough through their work, practical support and activities.”

The fund has been designed to help bolster the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents by encouraging inclusive communities.

It is hoped it will help society’s most vulnerable groups including supporting the elderly generation and providing opportunities for young people. The council is eager to hear from projects which will encourage better health and well-being in communities as well as improving the natural environment.

Priority will be given to supporting new or recently formed groups which fulfil the council objectives. Applications from existing groups will be considered thereafter.

There is no restriction on the amount of grant groups can apply for, however a full breakdown of costs will need to be submitted with applications.

To be eligible groups must operate in one or more wards in Weymouth and Portland and be able to demonstrate how the funding will benefit residents living in the area. Groups seeking funding must also be able to show good management skills and have appropriate safeguarding policies in place to work with children and vulnerable adults.

All grants must be used within one year of receipt.
