Glasses were raised as a Weymouth pub held a weekend of fundraising events to help pay for a piece of medical equipment at a hospital.

A barbecue, raffle and disco were held at the Tides Inn in King Street.

The following day a game of Play Your Cards Right was held, followed by live music from bands including Total Madness.

The fundraising team raised a total of £1,400 which has been donated to Poole Hospital’s surgical assessment unit to pay for a new medical ice machine.

The machine will be used to help treat patients who have received face, jaw, neck and mouth surgery.

The ice from the machine will help soothe wounds, stop bleeding and reduce swelling.

Farah Batchelor, fundraising manager for Poole Hospital, said she was delighted with the success of the fundraising efforts and praised all those involved. She said community efforts make a huge difference to boosting hospital equipment.

She said: “We’re extremely grateful to the staff and customers at the Tides Inn for this fantastic fundraising effort which will help many patients undergoing this complex area of surgery.

“When we told them the machine would cost around £1,000 they were very confident they could achieve this – and they didn’t disappoint.”

Jan Antonana, the landlady of the Tides Inn, decided to raise money for the ice machine after a member of her staff, who doesn’t want to be named, was diagnosed with throat cancer.

She said: “He would have benefited if there had been an ice machine, but thankfully his treatment has gone well and he is recovering.

“We are all absolutely delighted with how the fundraising has gone. I would like to give a huge thank you to the community.

“If they hadn’t participated and donated prizes it would have never have come to fruition.

“I would like to say thank you to Kings Hotels which donated quite a few prizes for the raffle.”

She added: “It was great to see such great community spirit.

“People were really happy to help out and donate money.”
