A popular children’s entertainer will be packing up his tricks after 50 years of cracking jokes for good causes.

Brian Walklett, otherwise known as Captain Stupid, has spent the last five decades amusing the region’s youngsters while raising thousands for charity.

From children’s parties to care homes, holiday clubs and summer fetes, Captain Stupid has done it all.

Brian, who lives with his wife in Radipole Lane, Weymouth, has had a long and distinguished career as an entertainer and part of the magic circle.

Originally from Norfolk, Brian travelled the country as a singer under the stage name Jason B Walker.

He said: “I was in Butlins in 1973, and they decided to send me to the Metropole in Blackpool so all the redcoats- we only earned a pittance but we had such a good time – said you can’t go with a name like Walklett so they created my stage name.”

Since moving to the area 25 years ago Brian took on children’s entertaining full time mastering balloon models and glove puppetry.

Fast becoming a key fixture for family holidays Brian took on long stints at Warmwell Holiday Park and Littlesea.

He said: "I originally got into it because everybody said I was a clown. They would say, ‘you’re clowning about again’, so I thought why not be a real one.”

As a professional clown, a large part of the Captain’s work was purely to raise money for charity including Help for Heroes, the RNLI and Weldmar Hospicecare.

His biggest feat was to raise £6,000 for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association which secured six dogs for the visually impaired.

He has also been a regular fixture at the ever popular Weldmar summer fete – where he recalls Martin Clunes requesting a balloon alien from him.

Unfortunately for 72-year-old Brian ill health means he can’t keep up with the little ones like he used to.

He said: “It’s a different world now, youngsters like different things to what they did in the old days. I’m going to keep singing in the care homes where I can – I still do a good Louis Armstrong.”
