Oars away! Rowers will be taking to the water this weekend to raise a smile – and some funds for a vital cause.

Weymouth rowers will be dressing up their gigs on Saturday morning and early afternoon to entertain people out and about on the Town Bridge and around the harbour.

Led by Jane Ward – who came up with the idea – rowers have been crafting ears and scarves for the boats. And members of the club will be on and around the Town Bridge with tins collecting money for Children in Need.

The Children in Need charity provides grants to projects in the UK which help children and young people who are disadvantaged. An appeal night is screened every year with fundraisers all over the country, which will take place on BBC1 at 7.30pm tomorrow (FRI), and people from across the country get involved with wacky ideas to raise money and have fun.

Members of Weymouth Rowing Club have often supported various good causes and charities, but it is thought to be one of the first time members have all come together to do something as a club.

And it was the opportunities club members have to get out on the water than inspired Jane to come up with the idea.

She said: “We are so fortunate that we are able to come down and have a good time in and around this fabulous harbour. We are all varying ages and have different levels of fitness but it is something we can all do.

“And for some people it would be impossible, beyond their wildest dreams.

“So I thought that, on Saturday when we are all out rowing and enjoying ourselves, it would be nice to remember those who are less fortunate and try and help.”

Times are still being firmed up but anyone who wants to see the gigs in their Children in Need fancy dress can head down to the Town Bridge from mid-morning to early afternoon for a chance to spot them.
