OBSERVERS have been treated to spectacular scenes in the skies above Dorset this autumn as the sun sets.

Last Friday in particular the skies were ablaze with colour for a stunning sunset.

Fortunately, Dorset Echo readers were ready with their camera to capture the fiery skies.

Sheila Hunn, a photographer from Portland, captured the sunset near the Jailhouse Café using her Panasonic Lumix camera.

She said: “I was standing outside the café taking pictures of the HMS Queen Elizabeth, then I turned around and the sun was just stunning.

“I got into my car and zoomed over to Verne Common Road where I pulled over and caught a picture of the sun as it was setting over the sea. It was beautiful.”

Alarna Hughes, another photographer who submitted a picture of the sunset, said: “I'm currently creating a photography portfolio. Portland Bill is the perfect place to capture the sunset, so I took this opportunity to see what images I could produce.”

Helen Roberts, a meteorologist from the Met Office said sunsets can be particularly colourful in the lead up to winter.

She added: “We do often get good sunsets at this time of the year.

“There are a few different reasons why.

“It is a combination of the angle of the sun, the cloud type, the amount of cloud, as well as the particles high up in the troposphere.

“Unfortunately, there is a lot of cloud pushing from the west today (Nov 20) which isn’t great for sunsets.”
