If you go down to the woods this weekend, you might see a twinkling surprise.

Sparkle in the Park, organised by the Friends of Lodmoor Country Park, will see children and adults alike light up the gardens with glittering lanterns.

Dozens of families will come together for the event tomorrow afternoon, where children can create their colourful lanterns from 3.30pm before taking part in a parade through the grounds.

The event was first held in 2010 and marks the start of Christmas celebrations in the Weymouth area.

Dinah Ellis, chairman of the Friends of Lodmoor County Park, said: “There will also be crafty things for them to do such as making decorations and art activities.

“While children are taking part in the crafts, we will have people setting up lanterns throughout the woods. We’ll light the children’s lanterns from 4.30pm when they will walk through the park.

“We’ll also have one of our members singing live music. We love to provide activities for children. In this day and age it’s so important that they get out and do something creative.”

The Friends of Lodmoor work in partnership with the parks section of the borough council to improve the site and attract visitors.

Dinah added that although Sparkle in the Park is free with materials provided, they will be grateful for donations so that the Friends can continue to carry out work.

She said: “We are hoping to carry out some improvements to the children’s play area.”

“All ages are welcome, it doesn’t just have to be children. Our members often come down to see the lights created by the children.

“Children who have taken part will get a golden token that they can take to the railway station and exchange for a chocolate coin.”

The miniature railway train will be running throughout the afternoon (fares apply).

All those taking part will meet near the galleon from 3.30pm on Sunday, and organisers say children must be accompanied at this event.
