Was it merely coincidence that this Monday, reputedly the most depressing day of the year, we learnt that black is now the most popular colour for cars?
I wonder if the colour of motors has replaced the length of women’s skirts as a good indicator of the optimism, or pessimism, of the nation?
Minis, we were up-lifted, maxis we were down-hearted and if the hem hovered around the knee we were willing to make the most of it.
I am not sure what conclusions we may draw from the fact that trousers now are the preferred mode of dress for many women.
Whatever the reason for so many dark cars, I went against the trend last September and fulfilled a long-time desire to own a bright yellow car.
In a car park full of dull colours it beams out like a block of sunshine, and I do not have remember where I parked it.
The only drawback is that, unlike the drivers of all those anonymous blacks and greys, I have to be well behaved at all times.
