Action has been taken by the council to help to reduce any further damage to Wool Bridge.

Currently 40 bags of stone in gabion baskets are now supporting the collapsed section of the bridge.

As reported, the historic bridge, which features in literature by Thomas Hardy partially collapsed earlier this month.

Wool Bridge is a Grade II listed structure which crosses the River Frome in Wool.

It remains unclear what caused the bridge to collapse, however it was reported that a crack in the bridge had developed over the Christmas period.

According to Historic England, Wool Bridge is the best preserved Elizabethan bridge in Dorset which dates back to the 16th century.

The historic crossing is linked with Woolbridge Manor, also a Grade II listed building, both of which feature in Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy.

Dorset County Council is continuing to monitor the bridge and are working to design a permanent repair.
