The Lymphoedema Service at Dorset County Hospital has received a new piece of equipment called a lymph scanner.

This is a compact, all-in-one measurement unit that is comprises an integrated probe and a display screen. The device is used to assess tissue water content which is increased in lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is swelling which commonly occurs in the arm or chest after treatment for breast cancer, but also in other conditions.

The scanner detects swelling before it can be identified clinically and is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment in the clinic.

Sister Emma Diaz, lymphoedema nurse based at Dorset County Hospital said: “This scanner is a valuable tool which will be very useful in our management of patients with various forms of cancer. We are very grateful to the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust for assisting with its purchase.”

Paul Ryan, trustee of the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust added: “Although we have been working hard to support the Cancer Centre Appeal, we are delighted to be continuing all our usual activities."
