A group of volunteers will be hitting the streets this evening in a bid to keep Weymouth warm.

The volunteers are part of a new community initiative to help homeless people and those less fortunate to stay warm as the cold weather hits.

The initiative, called 'I am not lost, Weymouth', will see volunteers tie donated hats, scarves, gloves, socks and even jackets to lampposts and other street furniture which will be free to take by anyone who needs them.

Each item of clothing will have a tag stating the item is not lost and free to take so passers-by know they are not abandoned.

Gemma Spearing, who started the initiative, said: "The clothes will be for anyone who wants them but it is aimed primarily at the less fortunate. Anyone who is homeless or even those who may just be struggling up until pay day."

Any clothes which don't find a home will then be picked up again on Monday afternoon so they do not litter the streets.

Gemma said the idea was inspired by the 'Keep Bristol Warm' campaign started by Gavyn Emery.

Miss Spearing, who volunteers at a Weymouth soup kitchen twice a week, said she contacted Gavyn and the relevant authorities to make sure she had the permissions necessary before organising the event.

Anyone wishing to help distribute clothes can meet the group at 7pm at Westham Bridge this evening (Sunday, February 25) and if you have clothes to donate call Gemma Spearing on 07907 291228
