A Dorchester charity is throwing its support behind efforts to improve mental health services across west Dorset.

Following its successful Fun Swim in February, Dorchester Lions presented a cheque for £1,000 to Dorset Mind.

Louise Regan, manager for Mind for west Dorset received the donation for the project from Lions president, Tony Howden, at a brief presentation at the Corn Exchange in Dorchester.

Andy Rose, spokesman for the Lions said: "Dorchester and District Lions are proud to be associated with this important campaign, which is being spear-headed by David Upshall Insurance Services, in association with Anita Harries and Dorset Mind.

"We understand from Louise that the project will start with the development of local support and befriending groups specifically aimed at providing help to those in our community struggling with anxiety and depression.

"This important first step of the campaign gets things 'off and running' and we know David is now working tirelessly with Louise and Anita Harries to maintain momentum in fundraising on behalf of Mind for West Dorset.

"As a community service organisation, Lions are aware how mental illness in all its forms, can impact on families and individuals alike - irrespective of age or situation.

"Mental health agencies carry out excellent work in our community - but demand for their help will always outstrip available resource. This was one reason why Dorchester Lions decided to get behind this important new initiative which will undoubtedly benefit the community.

"Dorchester Lions are proud to be able to contribute to this appeal."

Supporting Mind represents one of a number of community-centred projects that Dorchester Lions support throughout the year. The charity Pig Race, held on Friday, will benefit Citizens Advice in Dorchester.

The Lions are also busy finalising plans for their annual 2k Fun Run and timed 10k Run on May 6, an event which gives everyone a chance to raise money for their own cause or charity.
