Castletown is off to war this weekend.

A Second World War 'living history' event is being held in the Portland community on Saturday and Sunday.

Castletown at War is a joint event organised by the Castletown D-Day Centre and the English Heritage team at Portland Castle.

It aims to commemorate the setting up of a US Army field hospital in Castletown as part of the preparations for the D Day landings on Normandy beaches.

Organisers say there will be plenty for families to see and do at both the D-Day Centre and Portland Castle with living history army camps, vehicles, weapons displays, and a variety of WWII re-enactors recreating some of the events that took place in Castletown during the D-Day period.

The Coastline Cruises ferry ‘My Girl’, that served in and around Portland Harbour during the war will also be joining in the commemorations by carrying re-enactors from Weymouth to Castletown.

The Castletown D-Day Centre is a visitor attraction launched last year which offers an immersive visitor experience, telling the story of embarkation from a busy wartime dockyard.

It is built over two levels and located in the former Admiralty Buildings.

Castletown at War will take place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15.
