Churches in Weymouth and Dorchester are joining a global prayer movement.

Thy Kingdom Come, which runs from Ascension Thursday until Pentecost Sunday May 20, invites Christians from around the world to pray between Ascension and Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus Christ.

It started out as an invitation from the Archbishops’ of Canterbury and York in 2016 to the Church of England, and has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer.

Nearly 60 countries around the world will be praying at the same time, using the Lord’s Prayer with the intention of evangelisation.

In Weymouth there will be two beacon services, which are open to all Christians to hear stories of faith and pray.

During the services, two prayers will be focused on – the prayer of Pentecost ‘Come Holy Spirit’ and the prayer that others will come to know Jesus.

The first beacon service will take place on Tuesday May 15 at St John’s Church in Greenhill from 7.30pm. There will also be a prayer station available from 5pm and refreshments served from 7pm.

The second beacon service will take place on Sunday May 20 at All Saints Church in Weymouth starting at 11am. This will be a celebration for Pentecost followed by a bring and share lunch.

Holy Trinity Church in Weymouth will also be joining the prayer movement and on Sunday May 13 there will be a holy hour of prayer between 6pm and 7pm.

The prayer will focus on the communities of Weymouth and Portland, praying for the Holy Spirit to empower the congregation, and to pray that they continue to be effective witnesses to the Gospel.

In Dorchester, an ecumenical time of prayer will take place at Holy Trinity church on Friday May 18. The period of prayer will end with Evensong at St Peter’s Church on Sunday May 20. Churches in the Dorchester benefice will have prayer booklets available for those wishing to take part.

The Rt Revd Karen Gorham, Bishop of Sherborne, is encouraging Christians to get involved, and said: "This is a chance to pray for friends or family or people you care about to know the deep love that Christ has for them."
