Having just attended the consultation in Weymouth library regarding proposed lighting along the Esplanade, it is clear we, the local population and visitors who were asked at the consultation on the Esplanade last year, are to be totally ignored.

Over 40% said they wanted the return on the fairy lights or something similar when asked last year but the council has instructed the company, who is conducting the consultation, to ignore this.

We were told the council does not want to repeat this scheme.

Excuse me, the council is voted for by the public so what gives them the right to ignore us?

We are shown a presentation, containing amongst others of flashing lights but are told we will not have these when asked.

Why show them then?

This type of lighting is detrimental to the health of anyone with migraine headaches, epilepsy, brain tumours amongst others, so Weymouth would need a health warning on their promotional brochures, if something similar was the chosen scheme.

Apparently, the columns which will hold the lights, are ‘not up’ to holding fairy lights again as the weight and the wind would cause problems.

Is the wind different now from in previous decades?

We were told the schemes shown were chosen by children as well as adults.

Children are brought up with flashing lights and fast moving images.
However it is the adults who bring them to the seafront and what about the older people who have returned to Weymouth for their annual breaks?

Do they not count either, they do not want a Blackpool-type resort so might well vote with their feet and take their valuable custom elsewhere.
