Spenstock is back for its seventh year, and organisers are hoping to raise even more money to help battle Motor Neurone Disease.

The fundraising concert will be held in memory of former Weymouth-based drummer Spencer Bates, who sadly died from the disease in 2011.

The fundraiser merges Spencer’s name with that of the 60s festival Woodstock and promises to be just as lively.

This year four bands are set to perform in Weymouth Pavilion’s Ocean Room, including The C Sharp Blues Band, Hot Bacon, Tripod and Chloe, and Tom and the Jack on the Box.

Funds from the event will be donated to the west Dorset branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, which supports people suffering from the disease in the area and their families.

Spencer’s mum Mary, one of the event’s organisers said: “we are holding another Spenstock concert in memory of Spencer Bates, who died nearly seven years ago from this awful disease, and wanted to raise awareness, and money to help West Dorset people who are living with Motor Neurone Disease.

“Come along and enjoy an evening of great music with four local bands. Spencer’s wife Nicky will sing and their sons Samuel and Isaac are also going to perform before the other bands at 7pm.”

Speaking about the disease, Mrs Bates said: “It is a death sentence and can hit anyone. Those who suffer from it usually only have two to three years to live.

“It takes everything from them. Spencer was a big bloke and had two children. For over a year he couldn’t talk.”

Mrs Bates added Spenstock is the ‘legacy’ her son left behind, and that the money will go towards helping anybody, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in the area.

She added: “He would do anything for anyone. This was his wish and what he wanted to leave behind.

The event will take place on Friday, June 1, and is over 18s only.

Doors will open at 6.45am and is set to finish at midnight. Tickets cost £10 which can be purchased from http://weymouthpavilion.com/event/Spenstock
