It might be judged good news that £18m is being considered to strengthen Weymouth’s flood defences (Echo, June 14).
However, as much of Weymouth is built on shingle and alluvial deposit, and is therefore vulnerable to seepage from below as well as directly from the sea, and given the latest reports of ice melting in the Antarctic, suggesting a possible rise in sea levels of around one metre by 2070 (which looks closer every year), might it not be more sensible to consider investing funds in an orderly retreat from Melcombe Regis and the lower Wey Valley? Projections of the effects of global warming are constantly being outrun by what is actually happening.
We need only a little imagination to see the future and, for Weymouth, it looks wet.
