WEYMOUTH is going to get a brand new art installation - and there's lots of ways to have your say on how it should look.

The project is aiming to create a high-quality, creative enhancement to the town centre. Weymouth and Portland Borough Council has appointed b-side, a Dorset-based arts organisation, to deliver the project.

A series of public events has been organised, with the first taking place on Wednesday, July 11. This will be a 'walk and talk' session with a stroll around the town centre to discuss ideas. There are two sessions, the first from 2pm to 3.30pm and the second from 5.30pm to 7pm and anyone interested in going along is asked to sign up because places are limited.

Carolyn Black, B-side consultant, said: “We are keen to engage with the local Weymouth community to understand your needs and thoughts. We want to welcome everyone to all our events, and we’ll cater for all ages and abilities, just get in touch before you book. Join us for a walk around town to look at what we have, and consider what we could have, in Weymouth. Together we will run some ideas around, discuss opportunities and possible outcomes. We’ve allowed one and a half hours to do this – it may take less time (or more), but it is important that we don’t have to rush.”

Those who can't make it to consultation events can still have their say online. The project is using the hashtag #WalkTalkArt on Twitter and Instagram so people can share their views as the scheme develops.

The project is funded by the borough council. The management committee decided to allocate £123,000 from the reserves set aside for one-off projects towards a public art installation in December last year.

Cllr Richard Kosior, spokesman for tourism, culture and harbour said: “We value our communities’ input, ideas and opinions. We know there are so many ideas that people have for enhancing the environment in Weymouth. This is the first step to helping realise our collective ambitions and aspirations for high quality public art for the benefit of both residents and tourists alike.”
