Organisers of an explosive war-themed outdoor theatre production have had their marching orders to find an alternative location due to concerns from neighbours.

In an attempt to avoid a battle with farmers, landowners and residents, the people behind the production are now searching for a new site in Weymouth for their extravagant show.

It is understood a number concerns were raised including the the effect explosions and flashing lights would have on horses and other animals in neighbouring fields.

The former Army camp off Camp Road at Wyke Regis had been selected as the venue for a production as part of the arts festival Inside Out.

The festival is a chance to see rural and urban locations transformed by some of the best international outdoor circus, theatre, dance and art.

Maiden Castle has also been chosen as a performance space for the festival this September.

The Army camp would have hosted Furious Folly by Mark Anderson, a large-scale production for up to 2,000 people where the stage is a battlefield.

The anti-war show was originally staged in a town in Flanders to mark the anniversary of the first use of poison gas in the First World War.

According to promotional literature, the audience find themselves "immersed in a world of sound, light, pyrotechnics and performance".

Following discussions with locals however the team at Dorchester-based Activate Performing Arts which is bringing Inside Out shows to Dorset, is looking for a new site in Weymouth to stage the show.

Dom Kippin from Activate said: "Inside Out Dorset’s staging of Mark Anderson’s Furious Folly is being relocated to a new site. We undertake community consultation for all Inside Out Dorset events and the decision to move this specific performance has come about for a couple of reasons arising from this process.

"Inside Out Dorset has a long history of working with land guardians across Dorset and are fortunate to be able to hold reserve sites in place for such eventualities. We are now working to finalise a new location in Weymouth and are delighted that this incredible event, part of the national programme commemorating the centenary of the First World War, is still going ahead."

Mr Kippin said it was "quite late in the day" to change venues but concerns about the location had prompted the rethink.

A new venue for the show will be announced soon.

The show is due to be performed on Wednesday, September 19 and Thursday, September 20.
