SPIRITS were high in Chickerell at the weekend as crowds flocked to soak up the sun at an annual event.

The Spirit of Chickerell’s Picnic in the Park and Annual Show was held at Willowbed Hall and on Willowbed Field on Saturday.

The glorious weather saw hundreds of people turn out to enjoy the free event which saw the field lined with charity and craft stalls, a children’s fairground, bouncy castle and even a licensed bar.

Chairman of the Spirit of Chickerell committee, John Worth said every year the event gets 'bigger and better'.

"There's been a great turnout - we've had the good weather which helps," Mr Worth said. "This year we've got a lot more charity stall and a licensed bar for the first time which is keeping people happy. Of course it is all free. Chickerell is a village in its own right and has a strong community. This event is about bringing people together and community spirit. I think the Spirit of Chickerell sums it up perfectly - long may it last."

Inside the hall, the the Annual Village Show, organised by Rachel Bennett and Kate Williams, was open to the public between 12.30pm to 4pm and saw 136 exhibits from 44 exhibitors go on display.

This year's categories included fruit and veg, arts and crafts, photography, cookery, floral arrangement and a novice class and Mrs Williams said this year's standard had been 'very high'.

Kirsteen Mitchell headed to the event with her family.

"I think it's lovely. It's a really nice event for the community," Mrs Mitchell said. "I work at the local school so for me it's really lovely to see all the local children doing nice things with their families."

The crowds were kept entertained well into the evening with live music until 8.30pm from Jolly Boys Outing, Peacock Suit and Milk and Two.
