PEOPLE are being given the chance to have their say on plans to bring a brand new art installation to Weymouth town centre.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council are seeking views to help them deliver the new public artwork through a short survey which asks similar questions that have been asked as part of recent #WalkTalkArt events.

The walkabouts have brought together local residents and visitors to Weymouth with local arts consultancy group bside, a Dorset-based arts organisation who have been contracted to deliver the project.

Weymouth & Portland Borough Council allocated £123,000 towards the project from their reserves set aside for one-off projects in December last year.

Cllr Richard Kosior, spokesman for tourism, culture and harbour at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council, said: “The aim of these events has been to discuss art in Weymouth and how it might improve the visitor experience, environment, and help to raise the profile of the town.

"We value our communities’ input, ideas and opinions and we know there are so many ideas that people have for enhancing the environment in Weymouth

"This is the first step to helping realise our collective ambitions and aspirations for high-quality public art for the benefit of both residents and tourists alike.”

Carolyn Black, B-side consultant, added: “We are keen to engage with the local Weymouth community to understand your needs and thoughts."

Among the ideas which the council have suggested include a sculpture, public drinking fountain and a structure, bandstand or pavilion for performance and events.

Other ideas include an adaptable structure or object that accommodates artworks, events or performances along with pointers to draw attention to existing features on buildings, streets or rooftops.

The survey closes on 20 August and a summary of the findings will be included in a report for the councils Management Committee in September.
