A new stage is set for an explosive war-themed outdoor theatre production in Weymouth.

Land next to the park and ride site at Mount Pleasant has been chosen as a performance space for an extravagant show to be watched by 2,000 people.

As reported, the large-scale production of Mark Anderson’s anti-war show Furious Folly, being presented as part of arts festival Inside Out, was due to be staged at the former Army camp at Wyke Regis.

This location was ideal given the show’s themes.

However, producers had to have a rethink about the location after a number concerns were raised – including the effect explosions and flashing lights would have on horses and other animals in neighbouring fields.

The team at Dorchester-based Activate Performing Arts, which is bringing Inside Out shows to Dorset next month, therefore had to look for a new site in Weymouth to stage the show.

They have now confirmed Furious Folly will be shown at the park and ride site, specifically land immediately to the east of the site. The land will become a battlefield as the audience find themselves “immersed in a world of sound, light, pyrotechnics and performance”.

Dom Kippin, festival producer for Inside Out Dorset, said: “We are delighted to announce Mount Pleasant Park & Ride as the new site for our staging of Mark Anderson’s Furious Folly.

“We were keen that this event stayed in Weymouth and thank Dorset County Council and Weymouth and Portland Borough Council for their support.”

He added: “We looked at several alternatives and we felt the Mount Pleasant site had the most to offer audiences.

“We will be using the open area of land behind the car park for the performance, with the audience able to park in the car park.”

Inside Out is a chance to see rural and urban locations transformed by some of the best international outdoor circus, theatre, dance and art.

Maiden Castle has also been chosen as a performance space for the festival.

Furious Folly is due to be performed on are Thursday 20 and Friday 21 September from 7.30pm.

These dates have been changed from those published earlier.
