From Weymouth to West Virginia, one trailblazing Dorset scout will be joining more than 40,000 others at an upcoming global jamboree.

Samuel Breaks, aged 17 and from Weymouth, has been selected to represent the UK at a 'life-changing' for young scouts in West Virginia in the US next year.

Samuel will be part of the UK team at the World Scout Jamboree in July and August 2019, working alongside some 45,000 scouts from nearly every country in the world to share life-skills.

The jamboree, held once every four years, is an opportunity given to young scouts to get together and celebrate the principles and activities of scouting.

Samuel said the jamboree would be his second - but his first as part of the International Service team, or IST, which runs the activities at the jamboree.

"I really like meeting new people from different cultures so this is going to be a great experience for me," Samuel said. "I love playing sports, so it’ll be a fantastic opportunity to develop those skills alongside other scouts."

A spokesman for UK Scouting said the organisation had selected an 'amazing team' for the 'life-changing' event.

"The team has been brought together from across the country and will make the event possible, as well as picking up important skills for life. The team will help deliver all aspects of the event from delivering world-leading activities, to awe-inspiring staged events through to mass catering."

Chief Scout Bear Grylls meanwhile said: “Congratulations to Samuel Breaks and all the other UK volunteers who have been selected to support scouts at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. While lots of people know that Scouting helps young people learn the skills they need for life they often don’t realize that adult volunteers learn just as much as our young members. The jamboree is a great example of this. Over the course of the jamboree our volunteers will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences, learn new skills and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light. I wish Samuel all the best and I know they are going to have an amazing time next over the next few years.”
