A newly formed re-enactment group have joined forces with Dorset County Museum for historical tours.

First Spear Centurion Callumus Tatrium (Callum Jenkins-Teague) and Optio Trennus Caranti (James Taylor) will be running Roman tours.

The Auxiliaries are of the newly formed re-enactment group, Cohors Prima Durotrigum, a Roman Auxiliary group based in Dorchester.

The Durotriges were a Celtic tribe that encompassed Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and parts of Devon.

The group aims to portray military and civilian life as it was in the first century AD.

Partnered with Dorset County Museum, the group will be highlighting the wealth of local Roman and Celtic sites by offering historical tours, which began this month.

Mr Jenkins-Teague explained that there is a wealth of local lesser known historical sites, such as the recent excavations at Dorset County Museum, and the Roman Townhouse and amphitheatre, which deserve to benefit from the growing tourist trade flocking to the county town and Jurassic Coast.

In the upcoming year, the Cohort hope to offer spectacular march pasts in Dorchester, military manoeuvres and exercises as well as hosting events such as gladiator competitions, school groups, and festivals linked to Roman holidays within Dorchester’s own Amphitheatre.

The tours last approximately 45 minutes to an hour and tickets can be booked from Dorset County Museum by calling 01305 756827.

The upcoming tours will be held on Saturday, August 11, Wednesday, August 15, Saturday, August 18, Saturday, August 25, Wednesday, August 29 - all starting at 11am.

a fully exposed Roman Town House in the country and finally back at the museum where visitors can see the current exhibition ‘All Roads lead to Durnovaria’ and a live archaeological dig.
