A group of travellers have moved off land near Preston Beach Road in Weymouth.

The group arrived on the land next to the public footpath on Monday evening and brought with them four caravans and a campervan.

Dorset Police have been made aware of the group of travellers.

A police spokesman said: "We received reports of travellers setting up on land on Preston Beach Road at 10.54pm on Monday.”

Following police action, they then departed the site shortly after 2pm this afternoon.

Cllr Mike Byatt, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council’s Briefholder for Community Safety, said:

“Travellers may illegally occupy borough council owned land from time to time.

"When this happens we take swift action along with Dorset County Council’s Gypsy and Traveller Liaison Officer, and Dorset Police, to engage with groups and encourage them to move on.

“Requests for this certain group to move onto a specified traveller site were unsuccessful. Dorset Police issued a section 62a notice, directing the group to leave by 2pm today, which has been followed.

“Unfortunately some mess has been left behind.

"We have liaised with the Dorset Waste Partnership in order to get this cleared as soon as possible.”
