A GROUP of travellers has parked up on the Swannery car park in Weymouth.

The group, which comprises a small number of caravans, was first spotted on the morning of September 11.

The borough council, which owns the land, has been liaising with them.

Councillor Mike Byatt, Weymouth & Portland Borough Council's briefholder for Community Safety said: “When travellers occupy council land we work with Dorset County Council’s Gypsy and Traveller Liaison Officer and Dorset Police, to facilitate their leaving as soon as practicable. We also take measures to restrict access to our land."

A Dorset County Council spokesman said: “We’ve been informed that there are travellers at the Swannery Car Park in Weymouth. The transit site is now closed so the land owner (Weymouth & Portland Borough Council) will have to move the travellers on.

"The Gypsy and Travellers liaison Officer may be requested to conduct a needs order before the borough council give them a Notice to Quit.”

Travellers have previously been camped out in the town during the summer.

A group arrived at the end of August, bringing with them four caravans and a campervan.

The group was parked on land near Preston Beach road, but moved on after just two nights.
