Comments (40)IT'S quite rare for non-smokers to give a second thought to the needs of those who consume the evil weed.
But non-smoking hotelier Chaz Charlton has done just that - by inventing the mobile smoking shelter.
Mr Charlton, who owns the Clifton Hotel on Portland, developed the idea alongside hotel manager Mark Pollard.
The mobile shelter - available to guests and staff - is an umbrella large and light enough for people to wear to cover their heads and shoulders.
Portland born and raised Mr Charlton, 41, said the idea was born of necessity.
He said: "Basically, there was a planning issue when it came to putting up a smoking shelter.
"Plus, the Clifton gets strong winds coming off the cliffs from behind the hotel, so we couldn't put a shelter up there or out the front.
"So we came up with these shelters as a way for people to stand out the front and smoke and not worry about the wind and rain so much."
The hotel now provides boxes filled with the mobile shelters' for its patrons' and staff members' to use as they need.
"The customers love it," said Mr Charlton, "and the staff quite like them too.
"I don't smoke but I'm not against smokers either.
"I'm against the policy made for smokers to ensure they smoke outdoors.
"All it does is separate people and make it less likely for smokers and non-smokers to interact with each other.
"People just used to accept the atmosphere in pubs but now everyone has to split up.
"These shelters have proven to be very popular with guests aged 18 to 65."
Mr Pollard said: "We came up with the idea together.
"Once we had the idea we went on to the Internet to see if we could find some hats suitable.
"They've been especially popular because of the torrential rain we've been having."

Found on-line (doesn't matter what the subjectb was, because it's a comment that fits everything in Weymouth): On 5th June Weymouth Councils Leisure, Tourism and Community officer Ian James commented: It was just a miss and we are really depressed because its a freak occurrence."
No Mr James, by Weymouth's standards it's freakish not to be a freak.

Ok so the Clifton has made it the laughing stock of the south west, but hey get a humour bone in you and stop being such uptight plebs that you lot from that area collectively known as Weymouth (hell I bet half of you dont even live in Weymouth and would not know where it is anyway) and I dare say you ignorant morons who dont know where Weymouth is will be bleating on soon enough that the Olympics is being held in Weymouth harbour (that big bit of water that is infact Portland harbour)
It is strange why a lot of people from over the pond has made a comment here and as I am off Australia now it is quite good to find someone from this part on the thread too

It's also strange to here them referring to their habit as "legal" when the law has clearly been changed to state that in public places, it certainly isn't.
Of course, had smokers been a little more considerate of those around them, no legislation would have been necessary.
I personally think that the hats are a wonderful idea. I would suggest that the sides are enclosed to, in order to protect the smoker from the kind of horizontal rain we get down here sometimes.
There would be a useful side effect in that the smoke gathering in the hat would give the smoker the benefit of passive smoking too, which would serve to remove these selfish fellows from the gene pool for posterity.

Smokers are normally considerate. I have known smokers to voluntarily move away from people who dont smoke. It is a legal thing to buy if it was not for smokers you will probably have to pay for your NHS visits.
A change of tune from me has been brought about. OK so the hats are still daft and you idiots from England will probably still think that in your narrow minded selfish little brains but the publicity the pub has got from this is priceless.
Ohh And sad act...I will let you jump on my head after a 5 mile run...If you can keep up you old weeze bag

And if you factor in the amount of time lost to industry because of smoking related illness, you'll find that this rubbish you spout about Britain being better off because of smokers is just that.
But...i never said i had a problem with people smoking. I don't. I do, however, have a problem with having to inhale second hand smoke.
