TWO Weymouth schoolgirls reached the regional finals in the 'Doodle for Google' competition.

The website search engine Google held a competition that asked school children to design special logos for their website homepage with the theme 'my future'.

Hannah Pullen, 13, and Katie Dewland, 15, who attend Budmouth College in Chickerell, got to the South West regional heats after competing with more than 68,000 other entrants nationwide.

Arts teacher Vikki Gibson said: "We were absolutely delighted with the creativity that the students showed and it was a real achievement to get that far.

"The student's designs were really thoughtful and had important messages about their future."

Katie's design was based on conservation and featured animals and recycling symbols.

She said: "I think the environment is an important issue that my generation have to think about."

Hannah's design was based on technological advances and space age images. She said: "I enjoyed doing my design and I was really excited that I got that far."

Budmouth College asked all the students to come up with a logo and the teachers then voted on the top six designs to go to Google where just 48 designs were then picked to the South West regional finals.

Google said that the Weymouth schoolgirls' designs were chosen for artistic merit, creativity and interpretation of the theme.

Google webmaster Dennis Hwang said he likes to call the drawings doodles and over the past seven years he has designed various different logos for different events and themes including Valentines night, Christmas Day and artists' birthdays.
