SUPPORTERS of a new wildlife garden have been working hard to ensure that it will be filled with colour in the spring.

Members of Dorchester Lions Club were out in force to help plant bulbs, donated by Dorset Works, contractors for Dorset County Council, in the town's newest wildlife area in the defunct All Saints churchyard.

Supporters of the garden hope they will add a splash of colour to the area in the spring.

The garden is a partnership project between Dorset Wildlife Trust, Dorset Works, Dorset County Museum and the community to provide an oasis for all and to encourage wildlife-friendly gardening.

Work started in February and the garden is slowly becoming a haven for people and wildlife, with butterflies laying eggs and five different bat species recorded.

Dorset Wildlife Trust's people and wildlife co-ordinator Joy Wallis said: "This will be an open access space for the whole community, whether just to sit and enjoy the flowers and wildlife or to learn about wildlife gardening."

Dorset Wildlife Trust is looking for volunteers to become friends of the garden and join in monthly work parties. Contact Joy on 01305 264620.
