VOLUNTEERS in Dorchester are gearing up to give a Christmas treat to elderly and disabled people in the town.

The Volunteer Centre Dorchester is once again preparing to host its popular 'Company at Christmas' Christmas day meal.

The event held at the Damers restaurant at Dorset County Hospital provides a hot Christmas meal plus entertainment for elderly and disabled people who are likely to be on their own on the special day. This year the food at the Christmas day shindig is being sponsored by Trinity Street restaurant Taste.

The popular eaterie is run by Todd and Louise Moffat, who helped with wine for the Christmas meal last year but are sponsoring the food this time around.

Mrs Moffat said: "We had only just taken over last year and were happy to donate the wine for the meal but we were approached to help out again so Todd offered to sponsor the meal.

"It's a really good cause. We are only too pleased to help."

Deputy manager Craig Womble said: "This year we are extremely grateful to Taste for sponsoring the lunch, however we like to go that bit extra and are hoping to provide presents plus a small Christmas hamper for our guests.

"Therefore we are seeking donations of prizes/gifts or financial support to allow this to happen "We are conscious many individuals are isolated and lonely and find it difficult at this time of year. However some company, hot food, light entertainment and transport from door to door goes the day is a real treat.

"With approximately 35 guests and many volunteers we are keen make the event extra special this year so if anyone can help in any way we would be keen to hear from them including carol singers."
