PORTLAND in Bloom competition winners were presented with their trophies and certificates at a short ceremony held at the town council offices in Fortuneswell.

The eight categories in the competition, which attracted 10 entries, were judged during August by Councillors Sylvia Bradley, Maurice Gosling and Jenny Collinge.

The most prolific winner was Mr D. Langton, who carried off two firsts and two seconds, and six-year-old Louise Fryer, won the best young gardener section for the third successive year with her display of sunflowers.

Coun Bradley commented: "All who entered were enthusiastic and while judging we were impressed by how well their gardens were tended and, in the joy the displays gave to others, they certainly kept Portland in Bloom."

"However," she added, "we would like to see more entrants, especially from among juniors."
