A charity football match has been organised to raise money for the Veterans Hub.

The Charity clash will take place on Saturday, April 29 at the Bob Lucas football stadium in Weymouth, starting from 2pm with a kick off at 3pm.

George Parkinson from Weymouth wanted to organise the match to raise funds for the charity, which helps veterans and their family within the local community.

The hub, which is on Portland Road in Wyke Regis, has helped George with his own mental health, he said.

The 25-year-old said: “They’re helping me, and I just wanted to give something back, for other people to be able to experience the help that I have had, and my dad was also in the army.”

A few places still remain for people to take part in the match at a cost of £10 per player and spectators are welcome free of charge, although donations are welcome.

There will be two 45-minute matches where teams will be randomly selected and of mixed ability.

He added: “Football is something that I have played all my life and I know a lot of people who play, people as young as 18 have signed up, all the way up to 55.

“The aim is to make as much for the Veterans Hub as possible as well as making money for the club as a thank you for letting us use their grounds.”

Following the match, there will also be a special performance from Weymouth musician Billy Hutchinson as well as a raffle, traditional ice cream cart and bar.

George said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to my friends and family for backing me and supporting me in every single way.

“There are a couple of people who have been absolutely amazing in helping to get some fantastic raffle prizes and I can’t thank them enough. Without people like this, this kind of thing would be nowhere near as successful as I hope it is going to be.”

George, who started going to the Veterans Hub last month, said: “You hear their stories and they’re so interesting – they’re remarkable  - without people raising money, it wouldn’t be possible.”

He described the charity as one ‘close to his heart.’

Andy Price, Founder and Project Manager at the Hub extended his gratitude and said: “I think it’s an amazing gesture.”
