A convenience store in Bridport is set for a return thanks to two local residents.

St Swithun's Stores in North Allington was a popular convenience store and newsagent that has been sorely missed since it closed its doors.

Now sisters-in-law Georgina Marshall, 25 and Sophie Turner, 27, both from Bridport, plan to bring the store back, but this time with the slightly different name of St Swithins Store.

Georgina said: "St Swithun's was a convenience store for many years beforehand.

"It was run by a lady named Mrs Barnes, but she sadly passed away and it changed hands.

"It was a family-run business which we loved and used a lot.

"We live just down the road, we saw it sat empty and thought wouldn't it be awesome if we could bring it back?

"A family-run business that can hopefully give back something that was missing from the town."

In 2021, the store became new deli Lumbridge and Vickory, however, the business closed down shortly afterwards.

Georgina and Sophie have started work on the shop as they prepare to reopen on May 1.

They announced their plans to reopen the shop on Facebook earlier this week.

Since announcing they would be working to bring the shop back to town, Georgina said the support has been "crazy".

She said: "It has been absolutely crazy.

"Hundreds of people are so pleased that it will be reopening.

"I think it is going to help a lot of people, with everything going online and shops shutting we just want to provide a shop that people can come to for daily essentials."

St Swithun's Stores will be reopening with the new name St Swithins Store on May 1, 2023.

The store will be a "modern take" on the classic shop run by Mrs Barnes.

Georgina said: "There have been a few different businesses there, previous owners focused on vegan and vegetarian products and it didn't really work out.

"We are trying to bring it back to how it was, whilst bringing it up to date a little bit and modernising the look.

"We have about four weeks until we open so the nerves are there, we have to fill the store and get it all ready.

"But we are both so excited."
