Saddle up for a special pedal-powered cinema screening on Portland.

The bicycle-powered cinema will be presented off the cliff-top gardens of Pennsylvania Castle in partnership between b-side festival and Dorset’s touring arts charity Artsreach.

Audiences will put their feet to good use and get immersed in the experience by hopping on one of sixteen special bikes to help power a cinema screening of the animated classic BelleVille Rendez Vous as Electric Pedals arrive on Portland.

With bikes suitable for both adults and children to pedal - all the electricity for the screening is produced by the cyclists. There are no batteries, generators or backup power sources - it's all in the thighs.

A visual treat for audiences of all ages, BelleVille Rendez Vous follows the story of Champion – a boy who loves to watch TV - especially the red-hot jazz singing trio, The Triplets of Belleville, who belt out their toe-tapping numbers in the style of Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France.

Dorset Echo: BelleVille Rendez Vous

As a grownup, Champion becomes a Tour de France racer, but gets kidnapped en route by sinister mafia types; it’s up to his gran and his lazy dog Bruno to come to Champion’s rescue, and they enlist the help of The Triplets themselves, who are now elderly ladies.

This animated film has captured the imagination of audiences all over the world with its unique blend of classic animation and sharp wit.

As headline sponsors of the 2023 b-side festival, Pennsylvania Castle Estate is inviting audiences to pack a picnic, dress for all weather, bring cushions and camping chairs and be prepared to hop in the saddle for an outdoor cinema experience on Thursday, September 7.

Gates open at 7.45pm and The Hayloft Café Bar will be open before the screening at 8.15pm. Where possible, audiences are encouraged to walk, cycle or car share to this event.

Tickets are 'pay what you can'. A full-price ticket is £10 but tickets are also available for a minimum-price ticket of £4.50.
