Gravestones will be inspected at a Chickerell Churchyard to ensure the area is safe for the public.
Chickerell Town Council will be conducting gravestone inspections at St Mary's churchyard on Thursday, September 14.
All local authorities are required, under the Health and Safety at Work Act, to ensure memorials are safe in any of the graveyards or cemeteries that fall under their management.
The inspections are to establish whether there are any unstable gravestones that could present a danger to visitors.
If gravestones are found to be unstable, warning signs will be erected and the grave owners will be advised and asked to ensure repairs are made within a six-month period.
If a gravestone is found to be in a very dangerous condition, the area will be cordoned off and arrangements to have the memorial laid will be undertaken as soon as reasonably practicable.
For more information on the inspections, contact Facilities Manager Tara Williams on 01305 767458 or email tara.williams@chickerell-tc.gov.uk
