FURTHER plans for what is expected to be one of the largest Greggs in the country have been lodged.

The proposed site is set to be in the former Carphone Warehouse unit at the Wessex Gate retail park in Poole.

The unit has lain empty since 2020, until plans from site owners Wessex Gate Limited for Greggs to move in were approved in October 2022.

When it finally opens, the store, next door to Furniture Village, could be one of the biggest in the UK, with around 285 square metres of space.

Now, the bakery chain famous for its sausage rolls and steak bakes has applied for permission for an additional sign at the site.

Previously, plans for a five-metre-long sign above the front door of the unit were given the green light by council planners in July of last year.

If the new application is approved, there will be an additional two-metre by two-metre square sign on the unit’s side.

The bakery was given approval for five air conditioning condenser units and fixed outside seating at the retail park in July 2023.

In December of last year, plans to relocate these air conditioning units were refused by the council, as it was believed their new location ‘could give rise to materially impacting the amenity of neighbouring occupiers’.

A Greggs spokesperson previously said: “Greggs is always looking into new shop locations, while we are unable to confirm anything at the moment, we will be sure to share any information in due course.”

The Daily Echo has contacted Greggs for information on when the site is scheduled to open, but the chain is advertising for jobs at the unit.

No date is yet set for a decision on the latest planning application.

There are currently nine Greggs stores in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.
