A pharmacy on Portland is closing its doors for the final time today.

Today's closure of the Boots Fortuneswell Pharmacy at 1pm will mean that the only pharmacy left on the island of 14,000 residents is the Boots Pharmacy in Easton.

The pharmacy has a history of more than 100 years in Fortuneswell and has been described as a “local institution”.

News of the closure has worried residents of Portland, who question whether the Easton pharmacy would be able to handle the increased demand and that it poses a geographic obstacle for some.

Portland Mayor Cllr Carralyn Parkes invited Boots CEO Sebastian James to march with her from The Gatehouse Surgery to the Easton pharmacy to demonstrate the extra difficulty residents will face.

She said: "I was in the Fortuneswell pharmacy earlier this week and it was so sad to see all the medicine and the bits and pieces being packed away.

"I am bitterly disappointed. You see big corporations that make lots of money that don't care about the communities which they are making that money from. Shame on them.

"This is not the end of pharmacies in Underhill. It will take a lot of work behind the scenes but we will do everything we can."

Boots has been asked for comment.
