SHOPPERS have been searching for last-minute bargains at a big-name store which is due to shut this week.

Electrical retailer Currys is closing its store at Jubilee Retail Park in Weymouth on Friday, March 1.

Staff at the Weymouth store have been offered positions at stores in Dorchester or Poole but it is not known how many are taking up that offer.

No reason has been given for the closure. Previously, Weymouth and Portland Chamber of Commerce President Paul Appleby, said the announcement came "out of the blue" and said it was "very regrettable" the retail giant was leaving the town.

It means a huge unit at the retail park will become available,

Signs have appeared in the window at Currys announcing its closure at the end of this week.

Shoppers have been visiting the store for the last time to try and pick up any last-minute offers.

George and Jennifer Edden from Weymouth said they regularly shop at Currys.

Jennifer said: "I think it is despicable, it is a great shame to see it go.

"We don't like shopping online so we will probably have to go to Dorchester now.

"I would like to see Primark replace it."

George added: "There are so many shops closing in Weymouth now. It will be a ghost town soon."

Andrew Woolley and Karen Page, also from Weymouth said they were "horrified" that the electrical retailer was closing down.

Karen said: "We spend so much money here.

"It is alright for us because we have a car but anybody on public transport can't get to Dorchester, what are they going to do, bring it back on a bus?

"We have bought the washing machine, tumble drier and fridge-freezer all from here at the same time, but we came and saw everything we wanted. What do you do now?

"We have also bought a TV, PlayStations, sound bars, everything.

"They need something that will bring people into the town to replace it, to make people want to come."

Andrew said: "We prefer to go and look at what we buy, for a fridge-freezer we want to buy a certain size, you can't tell how much space you have inside the fridge by a picture online."

A Currys spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our Weymouth store will be closing on March 1, as the lease comes to an end.

"Colleagues impacted have been made aware of this decision and will be redeployed to local stores such as Dorchester or Poole, if they wish.

"We will also support them if they choose to move to another business.”

Our customers in Weymouth will still be able to find all the tech they need at our stores in either Dorchester or Poole, where our colleagues will be looking forward to helping them.”
