Chesil Beach is set to get a new café that is focused on providing locally sourced and sustainable food.

The Dorset-based restaurant and urban café enterprise, The Salt Pig, is set to open at the Dorset Wildlife Trust's Fine Foundation Wild Chesil Centre on Portland Beach Road.

Dorset Wildlife Trust, which owns the café, has been  seeking a new operator since Taste Café at the centre closed down at the end of August last year after 10 years of trading.

The new partnership between the wildlife trust and the café is described as 'a perfect fit' and will bring the food outlet, which has built its reputation in Purbeck, to south Dorset.

A spokesperson for the Dorset Wildlife Trust said: “We're delighted to announce a new café partnership with The Salt Pig who will be moving in to the Wild Chesil Centre to serve up their delicious locally sourced food and drinks every day in the café.

“We think their commitment to sourcing quality food from the local surroundings fits in perfectly with our ethos of sustainability.

The Salt Pig first opened its doors in Wareham in 2010 by owner James Warren, who has spent his entire working life in the Purbecks, including 14 years at Steeple Leaze Farm.

James then opened a second venue in Swanage in 2018

Since then, they have popped up in the village of Tyneham, Careys Secret Garden just outside Wareham, and Middle beach in Studland.

The company proudly sources its food locally with all of its beef, lamb, pork and game meats coming from coastal cliffs, wetlands, heath woods and small farms within Purbeck.

It also gets its crab and lobster from Kimmeridge Bay and featured on the BBC’s Countryfile winter special in 2018.

A spokesperson for The Salt Pig said: “Our restaurants and Urban Café serve food from the local Purbeck area only.

"It's all about the provenance and we believe that great food can come from your doorstep. Our butchery team and chefs take time and care over your food to bring home the flavours that the Isle Of Purbeck offers bringing an element of creativity as our produce changes daily.

"Our ethos is that food consumed should be from where you're from, utilising the ecosystem to which we are situated."

The Dorset Wildlife Trust says that it will be announcing an opening date soon.
