RESIDENTS are being encouraged to bring their own food and drink packaging when out and about in Dorset

A new campaign has been launched by action group Litter Free Dorset, encouraging individuals to bring their own packaging for food and drinks.

The campaign involves working with businesses to help reduce single-use packaging.

Businesses taking part will receive a "BYO hero" window sticker and campaign posters.

A spokesperson for Litter Free Dorset said: "We are excited to announce the launch of Litter Free Dorset’s Bring Your Own campaign, a community-driven initiative that empowers individuals to bring their own packaging when out and about in Dorset, while promoting businesses that are committed to cutting waste and reducing their environmental impact.

"Food and drink packaging accounts for over 20 per cent of litter in our towns and on our beaches, but we can change that!

"By encouraging the simple act of bringing your own packaging, we aim to inspire a collective effort towards a more sustainable lifestyle for people and businesses across Dorset."

Businesses have already joined the campaign to help reduce single-use waste.

At Baboo Gelato stores, you can take your own cup for a coffee or a scoop of ice cream, Hive Beach Company are keen for customers to bring or borrow a plate for their takeaway Sunday roast; and Oxfords Bakery stores will happily refill your coffee cup or pop your takeaway lunch into your own reusable box.

Businesses such as Groves Garden Centre, Brace of Butchers, and Norden Farm Shop are going even further by offering lots of loose items.

So whether you’re buying plants, potatoes, or pet supplies, you can get your favourite items packaging-free by bringing your own food bags, pots, and tubs.

The Plaza Cinema in Dorchester is happy for people to BYO cup for soft drink.

Annie Hanbury, Baboo Founder and Gelatiere, said: “This is a fantastic initiative by the brilliant people at Litter Free Dorset.

"Nobody thought that we would be able to get rid of single use supermarket plastic bags, but look at us now! BYO is so easy to do: I always have a reusable cup in my bag, and why stop at cups?
