A MEDIEVAL battle display thrilled the crowd at the Three Churches Fete in Cheselbourne.

The Companions of St George medieval troupe's swordfight and tent show entertained 600 visitors in the grounds of Cheselbourne Manor.

The fete hosted a bee display, candlestick making and performances from Wessex Karate Academy and the Stour Valley Stompers jazz band.

The children's area produced a costumed parade around the site led by a court jester.

A novelty dog show with a most like its owner' award and baking competitions also added to the fun and a hog roast proved popular.

The fete raised more than £5,000 for the churches of St Andrew's in Melcombe, All Saints' in Hilton and St Martin's in Cheselbourne.

Fete committee chairman Paul Calver said the medieval theme worked well with traditional village fete home-produce stalls. He said: "We are trying to raise funds to preserve the heritage of the English countryside here.

"The money goes towards the church but it is about maintaining English culture and we try to include everyone."

A whole lamb donated by farmers Willy and Jenny Earp and four tickets from Condor Ferries to visit France were on offer as prizes.

Beer donated by the Hall and Woodhouse brewery also helped raise money.
