POLICE are calling last orders on drinkers who congregate on a green in Dorchester.

They will increase patrols in the area to stop the nuisance caused by people who gather at Salisbury Fields to drink.

PCSO Mark Wodarek-Black said the move follows a call for action from nearby residents upset by the noise arising from drinkers at the green space.

The issue was one of several raised at a PACT - Partners and Communities Together - meeting in Dorchester when people ask for help in resolving problems in the town.

PCSO Wodarek-Black said: "It isn't a major problem because people don't gather there frequently. But when they do go there, it's the noise that bothers people living nearby."

Police also promised to deal with anti social behaviour arising from late night revellers heading for dark areas behind Trinity Street.

PCSO Wodarek-Black said: "There is some rowdiness there after the pubs close.

""Drinkers tend to get in the side roads behind Trinity Street and there's some noise and anti-social behaviour.

"You do get more noise now because people have to go outside to smoke.

"It tends to be dark in that area because there's not much public lighting.

"We're writing to the county council to ask for better lighting."

During the PACT meeting police also agreed to look into problems arising from caravans parked up at St George's Road in Dorchester following complaints.

PCSO Wodarek-Black said: "There are two caravans along there on Duchy of Cornwall land. There have been complaints about rubbish and the fact there are no proper toilet facilities so we'll see what can be done."

A complaint was made again at the PACT meeting about cyclists on the footpath alongside the River Frome.

PCSO Wodarek-Black said he would continue to patrol the area.

He said: "I've gone down there and spoken to cyclists to ask them to stop riding along there because of the risk to pedestrians.

"The difficulty is that the cycle path from Charminster into town stops at Hangman's Cottage and cyclists sometimes carry on where the path is for pedestrians only. I'm not aware that there has ever been an accident caused by cyclists."

The next PACT meeting is on November 13 at Dorchester's Corn Exchange.
